Mining and Smelting for Crafting

This section of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim guide covers the less explored crafting areas of the game, such as mining and metallurgy. We will explain their basic principles and suggest where they can be utilized.

Mining in Skyrim can only be performed in specific locations for obtaining different types of ore. First, you must visit a mine that offers the ore you are interested in (a complete list of mines can be found below). Once inside the mine, you must pick up a pickaxe (as shown above), set it as an active item in your inventory (you can also use two pickaxes – one for each hand). Note that not all mines are safe when visiting for the first time, so be ready to defeat bandits or monsters if required.

When you have at least one pickaxe and have selected it as an active “weapon,” you can proceed with mining by interacting with an unoccupied ore vein (as shown above). Approach the vein, press the E key, and wait for the process to end to receive one or several pieces of ore (there is also a chance that the main character can uncover a rare jewel while mining).

The table below lists all locations where you can find mines. The list specifies what type of ore you can obtain, which is essential if you want to use them later in the game for smithing. Use the maps from the first chapter of the atlas to find each location (start by finding the sector and then the number on the map).

If you want to get materials required for smithing, it is important to convert the ore you have collected in mines into ingots. Smelters are used for this purpose and can be found near the entrances to mines. The complete list of actions that can be performed after interacting with a smelter is given in the table below.

FAQ

What is mining?

Mining is the process of extracting valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth. These materials include coal, oil, natural gas, metals, and other substances. Mining can be done in a variety of ways, including digging tunnels, open-pit mining, and mountaintop removal. The minerals that are extracted from the earth are used in a variety of industries, including construction, manufacturing, and energy production.

What is smelting?

Smelting is the process of extracting metal from ore. Ore is a rock that contains minerals that are valuable to extract. The process of smelting involves heating the ore to a very high temperature to melt the metal and then separating it from the other materials in the ore. The metal that is extracted from the ore can then be used to make a variety of products, including tools, jewelry, and electronics.

What is crafting?

Crafting is the process of turning raw materials into finished products. This can include making clothing, jewelry, furniture, and other items. Crafting often involves using tools, such as needles, hammers, and saws, to shape and manipulate the materials. Crafting can be done as a hobby, as a way to make a living, or as a way to create unique, handmade items that cannot be found in stores.

How are mining, smelting, and crafting related?

Mining and smelting are related because mining is the process of extracting valuable minerals from the earth, and smelting is the process of extracting metal from ore. The metal that is extracted from ore can then be used in crafting to make a variety of products. For example, a jeweler might mine silver from the earth, smelt it into a usable form, and then use it to make jewelry. Similarly, a furniture maker might use wood that was mined from the earth to create a piece of furniture.
