Unlocking “Here Lies the Abyss” Quest

To unlock this quest, you must first complete the “From the Ashes” main quest and talk to Varric on the ramparts (M12,8). During this meeting, Gray Warden Hawke – the protagonist of the previous installment – will task you with the quest. To start, visit the war room and unlock the “Find the Warden” operation on the war map by spending 8 Power points and confirming your travel to Crestwood.

After arriving in Crestwood, you must travel to the cave near the Eastern edge of the map (M13,1a) while fighting off undead and highwaymen along the way. Once inside the cave, you will meet Hawke and then proceed to meet with Stroud (M13,1b). After this meeting, return to the war room in Skyhold and spend 8 Power points to unlock the entrance to The Western Approach. Head to the Ritual Tower (M19, 1a) and meet with Hawke and Stroud before entering the tower and facing Lord Livius Erimond.

Get rid of the mage guards quickly.

During the fight, prioritize the elimination of the Warden Spellbinder first (note that they are immune to ice attacks) and send some warriors to attack them in order to make it difficult for them to cast spells. Keep an eye out for the rage demon, and it’s best to attack it with your entire party. The smaller monsters can be dealt with later as they are not much of a problem. After defeating all the enemies, talk to the Hawk and Stroud. To continue the quest, return to Skyhold and go to the council room. Here, you can unlock the passage to the Adamant Fort (cost: 20 Power points), where the main part of the quest begins.

The wardens fight against demons

After the cutscene, you will be thrown into the action (M27,1a) – fight off several demons while climbing the stairs. You will come across the Grey Wardens fighting more Darkspawn (M27,1b) next to the descent. If you help them, they will retreat, but if you demand their surrender, you will have to fight them.

The Pride demon on the battlements

Cross the door and climb the stairs. You can now complete the optional quest to clear points of besiegement. You can identify them by the groups of Wardens fighting demons. The first one is to the right, after climbing onto the battlements (M27,1c). The rest can be found after leaving the tower behind (M27,1d), where the Pride demon is fighting, and along the battlements to the right (M27,1e). Helping in these fights will earn you Power points, Influence points, and additional experience. Afterwards, climb down the stairs.

Clarel and Edimond on the fort’s battlements

After passing through the outer walls, you will reach Clareel and the rest of the Wardens. You will have to make a choice: if you attack the Wardens, both they and the demons will become hostile towards you. However, if you choose “I have already spared Wardens” in the special menu or if Blackwall is on your party, some of the Wardens may side with you (if you have talked to your party members frequently, you may have access to additional dialogue options). After the battle, climb up the stairs where you will see a cutscene at the top.

The Fade

You will now enter the Fade (M27,1f). This place is unique as you will only be fighting demons and spiders here.

Emerald green shadow crystal

There are chests here called Emerald green shadow crystals which are worth looting as they contain valuable items.

The mirror

Another valuable item in the Fade are the mirrors. They permanently increase a character’s attribute after approaching and interacting with them.

Memory Consumption

Look up and talk to the spirit of Justynia. Defeat a group of wraiths and collect the memories they leave behind. Interact with each memory to open the passage.

Breaking the Last Barrier

Proceed until you encounter another barrier. Defeat stronger demons to bring down the barrier. The number and type of demons are randomly generated, making the fight lengthy. A supply crate is available near the stone in the center of the area.

The Boss Fight – Nightmare

Fight the final boss, Nightmare, in the last chamber. Nightmare floats in the air, making it hard to reach him with all blades. After depleting 30% of his health, he summons spiders and demons to his aid, and becomes nearly invisible. Hit him when he blinks. He becomes visible again after you defeat his summons.

The End of the Fade Stage

Choose between Hawke or Stroud to stay behind in the Fade to secure the party’s retreat. After leaving the Fade, decide to either drive the Grey Wardens away or include them in the Inquisition, which affects available operations on the war table.

Rewards for completing the quest:

  • Lots of experience
  • 3840 influence points
  • 8 power points

The altar in the Fade
