Improving Your Weapons

Basic Information

Improving your weapons allows you to change their statistics. Upgrades can increase damage while reducing reach, or increase reach at the cost of stronger recoil. Some upgrades can even add special effects, like a multiplied laser beam. By using the upgrade system, you can turn a regular handgun into a powerful firearm.

In order to upgrade your weapon in Fallout 4, you must use the weapons workbench. These workbenches can be found scattered throughout the game world, such as in almost every settlement, abandoned buildings, or gas stations. You can even construct your own in workshop mode (details in the chapter focusing on settlement creation).

Weapons workbenches are shown in the picture below. It’s important to note that the type of workbench has no impact on the number or type of upgrades that you can do.

How to Upgrade Your Weapon

After using the workbench, you’ll see the first screen related to upgrades.

From here, you can:

  • Select the weapon that you want to upgrade;
  • Disassemble the weapon in order to obtain resources;
  • Change the weapon’s name.

Once you’ve selected a weapon that you want to modify, you’ll see a list of available modifications. The modified part will be marked with a color (usually green). You’ll also see how the modification will impact the statistics of the upgraded tool.

To perform a modification, you must select the upgrade you’re interested in and then choose the “modify” option.

It’s important to note that you’ll need resources to perform a modification. The most popular resources are listed in the Weapon Modification – Resources List chapter.

Perks Related to Upgrades

In Fallout 4, in order to unlock advanced weapon upgrades, you must have the proper perks. Below is a list of the perks that you must develop in order to gain access to advanced modifications:

  • Gun Nut – for firearms
  • Science! – for energy weapons
  • Blacksmith – for melee weapons

You can see the perk requirements next to each upgrade.

1. What is weapon upgrading?

Weapon upgrading is the process of improving the performance of a weapon by adding new components or modifying existing ones. It can be done in various ways, such as increasing the weapon’s accuracy, range, damage output, or reducing its recoil or weight. Upgrading can be done on all types of weapons, including rifles, pistols, shotguns, and melee weapons.

2. How do I upgrade my weapon?

There are several ways to upgrade your weapon. The most common method is to use upgrade kits, which are items that can be found in the game or purchased from vendors. These kits can be used to modify specific aspects of your weapon, such as its scope, barrel, grip, or magazine. Alternatively, you can also use weapon attachments, which are items that can be attached to your weapon to enhance its performance. These attachments can be found in the game or purchased from vendors.

3. What are the benefits of upgrading my weapon?

The benefits of upgrading your weapon are significant. Upgraded weapons can deal more damage, fire faster, have better accuracy, and require less maintenance. They can also have additional features, such as silencers, extended magazines, or laser sights, that make them more versatile and effective in combat. Upgraded weapons can give you a significant advantage over your enemies, especially in challenging missions or multiplayer matches.

4. Are there any downsides to upgrading my weapon?

Upgrading your weapon can have some downsides, depending on your playstyle and preferences. For example, some upgrades may increase the weapon’s weight, making it harder to carry or aim. Others may reduce the weapon’s stealthiness, making it less effective in stealth missions. Some upgrades may also require specific skills or resources, which can be challenging to obtain or use. However, these downsides are usually minor compared to the benefits of upgrading, and can be mitigated by choosing the right upgrades for your weapon.

5. Can I undo or revert my weapon upgrades?

Most weapon upgrades are permanent, meaning that once you apply them, you cannot undo or revert them. However, some games may allow you to reset your weapon upgrades to their default state, at a cost or penalty. This can be useful if you want to try a different upgrade path or if you regret a particular upgrade. However, resetting your upgrades can also erase any progress or bonuses you have gained from them, so it is important to weigh the pros and cons before doing so.
