Elex: A Strange Mechanism – Walkthrough

A Strange Mechanism is a significant side quest in Domed City that can be found in Elex. The completion of this quest allows you to reach a hideout of a secret organization called Claws, which bears a strong resemblance to a thieves’ guild. After discovering the Claws’ hideout and meeting with them, you will be able to fulfill missions where you must steal valuable items.

To unlock this quest, speak with Vito in Domed City.

Vito runs a bar in Domed City, and during your initial meeting with him, you can receive a Strange Key, which must be used to solve a puzzle. Take this key to the western part of the city and find a loose brick with a lock inside it, as shown in the picture. Use the key to open the hatch leading to the sewers (100XP).

Descend the ladder and begin exploring the sewers. There, you can find the hideout of an organization called Claws (as shown in the picture). The entrance to the Claws’ hideout is guarded by Darius, and there are several ways to get inside:

  1. Tell Darius that you solved the puzzle with a mysterious key that you got from Vito.
  2. If you completed the side quest Tramp Confederacy in The Fort (the Outlaws headquarters), during which you must help Rat get promoted to security chief, he should give you Rat’s Claw quest item. Show it to Darius.
  3. If you met Katta on Berserker Island (the south end of the map) and helped her during the Exiled Unjustly side quest, she should give you Katta’s Claw. Show this item to Darius.

Warning – You can reach the sewers in an alternate way by skipping the meeting with Vito and without using the key. In close proximity to Domed City, south of it, you can find an entrance to a cave (as shown in the picture). That cave leads to the sewers, and you can reach the Claws’ hideout by going there.

SPOILER! The alternate entrance to the sewers is especially useful if you led to a scenario in which Domed City was attacked and taken by Albs. This passage allows you to avoid fights with Albs that are inside of the city.

After meeting with Hector and joining the Claws, you are now able to get missions.

Regardless of how you reached the Claws’ hideout, you can now explore it. Speaking with Hector and saying that you want to join the Claws is the most important step (don’t speak about the Clerks because you will be attacked!). This unlocks a new side quest called On Behalf of the Claws, where you can accept new requests from the Claws during which you must steal valuable items. You will receive My Claw, 500XP, Key for the Job Trunk, and access to your own chest for items.

Be cautious as there are two extremely valuable items within the hideout – the Dualskill amulet that provides a +5 boost to Strength, +5 boost to Dexterity, and +2 boost to Combat, and the Archon’s Might rifle, a legendary energy weapon. Additionally, you will discover chests belonging to the members of the Claws. Although they are locked, you can steal the keys from the members. However, you must possess the Pickpocket ability and avoid detection. Many of these chests contain valuable items.
