Unlikely Valentine

To unlock this quest, complete the Jewel of the Commonwealth main quest, and it will start automatically in the Diamond City Market (M6,1).

The quest objectives are to find Nick Valentine, free him, talk to him, and follow him.

Finding Nick Valentine

To find Nick Valentine, explore the metro tunnels.

Ellie Perkins will send you in search of the detective. The hideout of the local gang related to the investigation led by Valentine is in the Park Street Station northeast of Diamond City. Once you reach the destination, find the entrance to the metro tunnel, and use it.

Vault 114 is located in the metro tunnels.

You will face many groups of enemy triggermen during the trip. Attack each group by surprise and hide behind cover once the battles start. The enemies mostly use weak pistols. Explore the station first, then go along the tracks, which will lead you to Vault 114. Press the red button to unlock the entrance to the vault.

Other triggermen are in the vault.

You will face regular attacks by gangsters while exploring the vault. The first group will be found at the entrance to the crypt. Attack them from a distance as only a narrow, uncovered metal balcony leads to them. In the larger, darkened room, use a rifle or other similar weapon.

Freeing Nick Valentine

To free Nick Valentine, obtain the password or hack into the terminal.

The detective you seek is held in the last part of the vault, in the Overseer’s room, guarded by Dino. If possible, surprise attack him. Enter the room with Nick Valentine using the Overseer Door Password found at Dino’s corpse or by hacking into the terminal on the right. Talk to Valentine.

Important – There is a bobblehead in the room with Valentine, which increases the limit of bottlecaps that merchants can use.

Escaping with Valentine from Vault 114

Eliminate the triggermen on your way back.

Follow Nick Valentine. You will meet new triggermen on your way to the surface. Keep him in his full strength as he will help you during battles.

At Park Street Station, you will encounter Skinny Malone and his men. The outcome depends on your choices. If you have a high Charisma level, you can try convincing Darla to escape or turn on Malone. You can also choose a peaceful solution, which may allow you and Valentine to leave before Malone changes his mind. However, if persuasion fails or you choose to fight, be prepared for a battle. Use a shotgun or another short-range weapon since there is nowhere to hide. Fortunately, Malone and his men are not a significant threat.

Follow Nick Valentine, and he will show you a hatch in the metro tunnels that you bypassed earlier. The hatch will lead you back to the surface. Use it and talk to the detective, who will ask you to meet him in his agency in Diamond City.

Quest rewards: Experience points and a new main quest (Getting a Clue).
