This page provides a walkthrough for the Path to the Hidden City story mission, specifically for completing the Trial of the Eagle, in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
The Trial of the Eagle is one of the most complex environmental puzzles in the game. Lara’s objective is to climb to the top of an unusual tower, which involves smaller puzzles and mechanical traps along the way.

Reaching the tower
Soon after beginning, players will encounter a large tower where the majority of the Trial of the Eagle will take place. To reach the tower, grab onto the shelf and move to the side. A new camp will be encountered on the way.
Jump over a small chasm and climb onto the shelf above to reach the base of the tower and start the puzzles of the Trial of the Eagle.
First part of the puzzle – reaching the first sail
The tower has numerous moving mechanisms, and players must be cautious as most of them will instantly kill Lara if touched. Many areas also require precise jumps, otherwise Lara will fall to her death.
Shortly after starting the puzzle, players will need to grab onto the ledge as seen in the image above and proceed to the side.
Another challenging spot is shown in the image above. After Lara reaches a climbing wall, she must rappel down on the rope and reach the platform below her.
Jump onto the marked wall (rebounding from the other surface is necessary to grab the higher ledge), climb up and move to the right to reach the outside of the tower.
Lara will reach a new climbing wall. Upon sticking to it, start rappelling down and lower yourself as much as possible. Then, run across the wall to gain momentum. This will enable you to jump onto the next climbing wall as shown in the image above.
Climb to the top and players will find themselves near a structure resembling a sail. Position Lara near the sail and aim at the rope coil as shown in the image. This will open a passage to proceed.
Second part of the puzzle – reaching the second sail
Approach the rotating central structure. Players will need to jump onto the depicted ladder when it is directly in front of Lara.
To progress, climb the beam while avoiding the mechanisms that could kill Lara on contact. You must reach the rotating structure on the wall of the tower, as seen in the picture. Wait for it to stop in a position that allows you to climb it, then proceed quickly.
Once on a larger shelf, cross the beam and jump to the spot shown in the picture. Lara will spot another sail behind the damaged wall, but you won’t be able to get through yet.
Jump on the new ledge, but do not climb to the top yet as there is a working mechanism shown in picture 1. Wait for it to pass Lara, then climb and quickly reach the hole to the right, as shown in picture 2. You are now near the second sail.
Stand near the sail and aim at the rope coil shown in the picture. This will destroy part of the wooden construction.
Inspect the damaged exterior section of the tower and you will find a round lever shown in the picture above. You can hit it with a rope arrow. Lara will pull the lever and open a passage on the right, but unfortunately only for a short time.
Act quickly as the lever will soon return to its default position and the passage on the right will close. Reach the rope coil to the left of the sail and shoot the lever from there with a rope arrow as shown in picture 1. By combining these two actions, you will be able to secure the lever in the correct position and the passage will be permanently opened as shown in picture 2.
Once again stand near the sail and aim your arrow at the rope coil in the center section of the tower, as shown in the picture above. This is the third and final section of the puzzle.
Third part of the puzzle – reaching the main tower exit
Like before, wait for a good moment to jump on one of the ladders on the central mechanism. Climb it and jump onto the center of the device.
Move across the beam and the two climbing walls depicted in the screenshot. Remember to press the climbing ace button.
Having reached the highest shelf, walk across another beam and jump to the ledge near the red section of the central structure. Wait for the right moment to jump to the two higher ledges as shown in the picture.
Climb the top beam and go to its end. Wait until you are close to the climbing wall depicted in the picture, and perform a long jump using the grappling axe.
Rappel down using the rope and start running across the wall. Jump on the ledges located on your right.
Part of the structure will crumble, but it’s a scripted event. Have Lara climb, and she will reach the exit as shown in the picture.
Getting to the Hidden City Region
Follow the narrow trail that will take you to a new climbing wall. Use your axe to jump towards it and climb the wooden structure. Then face the ladder and jump onto it.
Take the new route that leads you to a mountain camp called Quipo Overlook. This is a completely new location in the game that is detailed on another page of the walkthrough.
