Learn how to obtain the hanged man’s body and progress in the investigation in this section of the Disco Elysium guide.
The hanged man’s body is situated behind the Whirling-In-Rags Hotel building and is associated with the main story quest, Getting the Body Down. The body must be removed from the tree so that a field autopsy can be conducted to advance the investigation. This can be accomplished in two ways.

Shoot the Belt
Approach the hanged man and examine the body. At this stage of the investigation, Harrier will probably vomit, while Kim will respond very indulgently, saying that everyone goes through it and that Ammonia can help counteract the odour of decomposing flesh, which can be obtained from the gardener.
Approach the woman sitting near the Whirling-In-Rag Hotel and request ammonia – choose the dialogue option identified in the image above. If you wish, you can also request her gloves, which she will gladly give you.
After obtaining the ammonia, return to the hanged man and attempt to pass the Endurance skill check. Harrier’s chances of passing the test are slim, but there is no need to be concerned. You will now gain access to the new skill – Volumetric Shit Compressor.
Go to the Thought Cabinet, choose Volumetric Shit Compressor from the list on the left, and then click Internalize. It will take 30 minutes to learn a new skill – speak with an NPC or read a book to advance the time forward.
Return to the hanged man and attempt to pass the Endurance test again – as shown in the image above, the skill check’s chance of success will be quite high.
If you are concerned that the attempt may fail, save the game so that you can reload it and try again.
You must now examine the body – choose all dialogue options and investigate all possible clues to gather as much information as possible. They will be beneficial in the investigation.
After thoroughly examining the hanged body and consulting with Kim, choose the dialogue option highlighted in the image above. Harrier will inquire about how to retrieve the body.
Choose “Maybe we could shoot him down?” and then:
- Just shoot the belt, the bullet will break it: to suggest that you should try your luck by shooting the belt on which the man has hung;
- Take the shot lieutenant – what’s the worst thing that could happen?: you encourage Kim to take the shot;
- Easy does it, partner: after this dialogue option, Kim will aim and shoot.
Kim’s attempt will fail, so you must take matters into your own hands – choose the dialog option, Can I have the gun? I should try.
To take down the body, you need to pass the Hand/Eye Coordination skill check. It can be tough if your character, Harrier, doesn’t have enough points for it. To increase your chances slightly, choose the “Close your left eye first” dialog option. If successful, the body will fall to the ground, and you can perform a field autopsy.
Seek Help from Evrart Claire
Go to Evrart’s office and enter. If you’re unsure how to get there, check out the “Evrart Claire – where is he?” page for exact instructions. Your initial conversation with the Union boss will not be pleasant, and if you sit in a chair, Harrier will lose 1 Health point (unless you pass a passive Pain Threshold skill check). Eventually, you’ll be able to ask Evrart to help you take the dead body down from the tree. Say, “Could you please help me get a dead body down from a tree?”
Initially, Evrart will not want to get involved. However, Kim will join the conversation and mention that the man was hung on a cargo belt, indicating the Union’s involvement. Choose the “Yeah, the belt thing” option, and Evrart will agree to assist you. He’ll send you to Measurehead.
Measurehead will be hesitant to cooperate at first. Kim will convince him that the order came straight from Evrart by selecting the following dialog options:
- “You’re right about this. Now I need you to help me get that corpse down from the tree.”
- “Evrart told you to help us get the body down from the tree.”
- “Okay then.”
Measurehead will go to pull the body off the tree while you watch the bridge. Once he returns, you can thank him for his help and cooperation. The body has been removed, allowing you to return to the crime scene and perform a field autopsy.
