Woodcutting, Tanning, Cooking | Crafting

This section of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim guide explains the three crafting skills in the game that are less developed: woodcutting, tanning, and cooking. We will cover the basic principles of each and suggest where they can be useful.

  • Woodcutting
  • Tanning
  • Cooking

Woodcutting

Woodcutting is not a profitable activity, so it should be viewed as an option rather than a necessity. To try your hand at woodcutting, visit one of the sawmills found in Skyrim. Once there, find a woodcutter’s axe, pick it up, and activate it from your inventory. Then interact with a chopping block (as seen on the screen above) to begin chopping wood. You can sell the materials obtained from woodcutting, but don’t expect to get a lot of gold for them.

Tanning

Tanning allows you to turn animal hides into leather and leather into leather strips. All the objects received from tanning are used in smithing. Therefore, if you want to improve your smithing abilities and avoid wasting time or money on leather objects, tanning is essential. Tanning racks (such as the one seen on the screen above) are used for this craft and are usually found where blacksmiths work. One rack is located in Riverwood. The table below lists all the activities available after interacting with a tanning rack.

Cooking in Skyrim

In Skyrim, cooking is not the most effective way to improve your health, mana, or stamina. Most meals provide a small bonus compared to standard potions, which makes them less useful. However, a few meals offer a larger bonus, but it’s not worth spending too much time preparing them because it doesn’t improve any of your skills. If you still want to become a cook, visit a kitchen in a public place and interact with a cooking pot. Check the table below for a list of meals, stews, and soups. You can find almost all the ingredients by killing wild animals, stealing from kitchens, or purchasing from food and drink merchants.
