You can begin working with Ray by locating him in the motel.
The easiest way to activate this quest is during the Stolen Equipment main quest, as the thief who stole from you is connected to this quest. Ray can be found in the Sandy Pines motel, situated north of Goliet. Once you find him, you must go through all possible dialogues to initiate collaboration with him (the For a Handful of Shards quest will be automatically cancelled, as it requires you to hunt for Ray).
Choose one of the behavior options during a conversation with Spike or enter the fort through another method.
The Fort is the base of the Outlaws and is situated southeast of the motel. Ray can be found near the entrance to the city. When entering the fort, a guard named Spike will stop you and request payment. You can pay him 200 Elexit, fight him (using your fists), or use the Suggestion skill. If you do not want to waste your time with Spike, you can fly over the wall with your jetpack.
When you reach Wyatt with Ray (earning 200XP), you can converse about one of the bounties submitted for Ray’s capture. You will receive 400XP and a Contract for Ray. Nine more of these contracts are available, but they are part of the For a Handful of Shards quest. You do not need to undertake this quest immediately, as Ray will now become a permanent companion, traveling with you (gaining 500XP).
