Overview

Companions in Skyrim can be divided into four categories:

1) Permanent followers – These individuals will remain with you until you dismiss them. You can give them orders and they can carry items for you. More information on this group can be found below.

2) Temporary allies – These individuals will join you for a limited time period, usually during quests. Once the quest is completed, they will leave your company. You cannot recruit them for future journeys.

3) Animals – Dogs and horses fall under this category. Horses do not participate in battles, with the exception of Shadowmere (more information on this horse can be found in the Hints chapter). Dogs act as permanent followers and will follow you into battle. They are counted separately from human followers.

4) Magical allies – This group consists of atronachs, dremora, and undead creatures that can be summoned or resurrected using magic spells. The strength and number of magical followers depend on the main character’s level and spells used. Some magical creatures can remain on the battlefield permanently.

We strongly advise improving your team’s strength and recruiting as many followers as possible. This is especially important for players who prefer the thief or mage playstyles, as allies can provide valuable distractions during battles.

The main character in the game can have companions follow them wherever they go, and the player can have a limited control over them. By initiating a conversation with an ally, the player can choose from a list of dialogue options to order the follower to remain where they are, do something, or take some of the carried equipment. Players can use their followers to carry their things, and the followers will automatically use the items based on their specializations. Followers can be sent away at any time, but they usually return to the location where they first met, and players can ask them to join the team again in the future. It is recommended to switch followers from time to time to best suit the current style of play. Followers are not immortal, and they can suffer severe injuries resulting in opponents switching their attention to the player. The game provides a list of followers, their area of expertise, location, and recruitment requirements. The player can find additional help in the World Maps chapter and quest chapters of the game.
