Starting the Quest

The chance to trigger this quest arises during the With Friends Like These quest where you must prove your worth to the Dark Brotherhood before joining. You must create a situation where you are kidnapped by Astrid and ordered to kill one of the captives in the abandoned shack. Instead of killing the prisoner, attack the assassin (as shown in the screenshot). Be careful as Astrid has a life-draining dagger and is extremely agile. The quest will activate after Astrid is killed.

Note: Attacking Astrid will terminate any chance of further cooperation with the Dark Brotherhood!

Quest Unlocked: Eliminating the Dark Brotherhood

Main Objective: Report Astrid’s Death to a Guard

After defeating Astrid, loot her corpse and take the key to the abandoned shack. You may also want to take the valuable Blade of Woe. Before leaving, speak to the prisoners and release them from captivity (as shown in the screenshot).

You may now leave the abandoned shack. The objective does not specify which guard to report to, so you can go to any nearby location, like Solitude. Speak to a guard and inform them of Astrid’s death (as shown in the screenshot). You will be directed to Commander Maro.

Main Objective: Speak to Commander Maro

Open the world map and head to Dragon Bridge in the north-west of Skyrim. Commander Maro is located in the Penitus Oculatus Outpost (as shown in the screenshot). If you haven’t discovered this location yet, you can start from Solitude and follow the main road west.

When you reach the outpost, find Commander Maro and inform him of the Dark Brotherhood’s leader’s death (as shown in the screenshot). He will be pleased and request that you eliminate the remaining assassins, giving you the password to their hideout.

Main Objective: Slay the Assassins in the Sanctuary!

Exit the outpost and open the world map. The Dark Brotherhood’s Sanctuary is located in the south-west of Skyrim (as shown in the screenshot). The easiest way to get there is to start from Falkret and head west.

The entrance to the hideout is hidden between rocks (as shown in the screenshot), but it is easy to locate. Approach the Black Door and interact with it. The gatekeeper will ask for a password; select the first option, “Silence, my brother”.

The Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary has five assassins that must be taken out. It’s best to engage them one at a time since each fight will be challenging. You’ll likely face Arnbjorn first, followed by the other members. Be cautious when fighting Festus Krex (shown in the screenshot) as he’s a powerful mage who can cast dangerous spells.

New main objective: Inform Commander Maro of your success

Before leaving, search the Sanctuary for valuable items that could be useful for a thief. You can also find Skill Books and a Word Wall where you can learn a new Word of Power. Once you’re done, head back to the Penitus Oculatus Outpost in Dragon Bridge. Report to Commander Maro that all members of the Dark Brotherhood have been eliminated (as seen in the screenshot) and claim your reward of 3000 gold pieces.
