The Mind of Madness – p. 1

Initiating the quest

Requirements for the quest: This quest can be completed at any point in the game. It is recommended to complete it early on in the game, as it primarily consists of puzzles and does not involve any real fights.

Open the world map and proceed to Solitude (as shown in the above screen). The city can be found in the northern region of Skyrim, and if you have not been there before, it would be easier to use a carriage, such as the one at Whiterun Stables.

During the day, go to the eastern part of Solitude, where the Bard’s College is located. Here, you will meet Dervenin (as shown in the above screen), who will inform you that his master is trapped in between worlds. Dervenin will instruct you to go to the Blue Palace in Solitude, specifically to the normally inaccessible Pelagius Wing, and will provide you with Pelagius’s Hip Bone.

Accessing the Pelagius Wing

New main objective: Obtain access to the Pelagius Wing of the Blue Palace

Proceed south-east and you will soon reach the entrance to the Blue Palace (as shown in the above screen). If you have visited this location before, you can use the fact that it is visible on the world map to speed things up. In order to gain access to the Pelagius Wing, you must obtain one of the keys possessed by three people in the Palace. Unfortunately, these keys cannot be stolen, as they do not appear in the inventories of these characters. Instead, speak to them and persuade them to give you the key.

At first, Erdi (as shown in the above screen) may not be willing to give you the Pelagius Wing Key, but she should change her mind if you inform her that Falk has sent you to investigate the area.

Falk Firebeard (as shown in the above screen) will not be willing to give you the Pelagius Wing Key, and the only way to change his mind is to complete The Man Who Cried Wolf side quest, which he can provide you with. After completing the quest, return to Falk and try again.

Una (as shown in the above screen) may not be eager to give you the Pelagius Wing Key initially, but she should change her mind if you mention that Falk has sent you to investigate the area.

New main objective: Use the key to gain entry to the Pelagius Wing

New main objective: Search for Dervenin’s master in the Pelagius Wing

The door leading to the Pelagius Wing can be found in the south-west part of Blue Palace (as shown in the above screen). Use the key obtained from one of the characters mentioned earlier and start exploring the empty corridors of the Palace. Continue until you are taken automatically to a new location.

You will be taken to The Mind of a Madman, where you will have to solve some puzzles on your own. The Daedric Prince of Madness, Sheogorath, is behind the whole commotion. Begin by listening to his conversation with Pelagius the Mad (as shown in the above screen).

The only way to directly communicate with Sheogorath is after Pelagius’ dismissal. This will be indicated by the screenshot above. During the lengthy conversation, you will discover that you are inside Emperor Pelagius III’s mind and the only way to escape is by solving all the puzzles set by the Daedric Prince. To aid in this task, Sheogorath will provide you with the Wabbajack, as standard items are not usable here.
